This
is Powder, a large White German Shepherd. Powder had had perhaps two litters
in a puppy mill before the mill was closed down and she was rescued. She
came to our friend Joyce who fostered and then adopted her. She weighed
43 pounds when she first came to Joyce and now weighs over 100 pounds. Joyce
keeps her on a strict diet but there are thyroid problems that are now under
control and her weight is coming down. In the meantime she looks like a
small polar bear.
Powder is probably the sweetest and most sensitive dog I have ever known. Joyce would take Powder along when visiting Joyce's mom in a nursing home and Powder would come to about three or four feet from people in the lounge and if they beckoned she would come closer but if they didn't she would move on. She understood who wanted to be with her and who didn't. Powder is a great friend of mine, especially in the middle of the night. When Ellie and I visit with Joyce, Ellie sleeps in the guest bedroom, Joyce is in her room and I'm on the couch in the living room. It is reported that I snore but I have never heard it. It isn't a large house and these three rooms are close together. Powder sleeps in the room with Joyce and when Joyce gets up in the middle of the night, here comes Powder for a visit with me. A large earnest nose about two inches away. How could one not be glad to see Powder? Powder also sold us on the breed. We weren't aware of White German Shepherds but now we have our own, Prince. We had always had pound dogs but Powder convinced us we needed a WGS and we got Prince from a breeder. A most welcome addition to the family. |
